Sustainability concerns both large companies and SMEs; the fact is that small and medium-sized enterprises increasingly implement measures and initiatives aimed at incorporating sustainable corporate behaviors. A company whose foundations and purposes do not contemplate a positive impact on the environment is destined to disappear.
Clarifying objectives, motivating, measuring and communicating results are some of the key elements of VerdEscandinavia’s ‘Seven-phase integral strategy’, which is detailed below:
Phase 1: Inquiry/Exploration. The first phase consists of knowing the business strategy of the company, its mission, its vision and its values. A SWOT analysis is the appropriate tool to carry out this first stage. We use various types of approach: internal or external documents, content analysis in the corporate intranet and external material published in different formats. We also include meetings with managers and other key people in the company.
Phase 2: Evaluation. Here we evaluate the degree of commitment of the internal actors of the company with respect to sustainability and the level of knowledge on the subject. For example, what do they mean by sustainability? Do they manifest a sustainable behavior in private and work life? The instruments used in this phase are interviews and surveys.
Phase 3: Identification. We identify the groups affected by the activities and decisions of the company (stakeholders): customers, employees, suppliers, shareholders, neighbors, local communities, unions, civil organizations, etc.
Phase 4: Analysis. We analyze the social, environmental and economic impact both positive and negative, of the company on its environment and on stakeholders. It is essential to monitor the power of cooperation, competition or opposition of stakeholders.
Phase 5: Definition. We establish together with the company a set of priorities to be addressed, defining qualitative and quantitative objectives for each priority. We establish strategies to effectively manage the relationship with stakeholders.
Phase 6: Design and implementation. We design a plan of action to achieve the objectives. The action plan must clearly define the responsibilities of each, human and material resources and, above all, the methodology of continuous measurement during the execution of the plan and final measurement when the action is completed. It is important to provide corrective measures in case of failure to reach the target. Having indicators is indispensable for measuring progress and weaknesses and also for establishing starting points for future actions.
Phase 7: Communication. We create an internal and external communication plan. Communication of the company’s sustainability strategy and its achievements is an important component of our methodology. Clear and precise communication is a necessary and powerful tool to achieve the action of employees and other actors. In addition, it enhances the positive image of the company, and reaffirms transparency as a basic value of sustainability. The communication plan includes identifying the best channels of communication both external and internal, and exploring the opportunities offered by social networks as a tool for communication of sustainability.
